Elodea (Egeria) Plant: Complete Care Guide & How It Differs from Anacharis

If you've ever taken a biology class, you've probably seen Elodea under a microscope. This classic aquatic plant has been used in science classrooms for decades to demonstrate photosynthesis — and it's equally useful in aquariums for beginners looking for a low-maintenance, fast-growing plant.

Elodea vs. Anacharis: Are They the Same?

This is the most common question, and the answer is: they're closely related but technically different species.

  • Elodea canadensis (Canadian Waterweed) — smaller leaves, slightly slower growth, native to North America
  • Egeria densa (commonly sold as "Anacharis" or "Brazilian Elodea") — larger leaves, faster growth, native to South America

In the aquarium trade, both are frequently sold under the name "Anacharis" or "Elodea" interchangeably. What most stores sell as Anacharis is actually Egeria densa. Care for both is virtually identical.

Care Requirements

Light

Low to high. Elodea grows in nearly any light condition, though it grows fastest and most compact under moderate light.

CO2

Not required. Elodea is one of the most efficient plants at using dissolved CO2 from the water. You can watch tiny oxygen bubbles forming on its leaves during photosynthesis (called "pearling").

Temperature

59–82°F (15–28°C). Both Elodea and Egeria tolerate cold water, making them suitable for goldfish tanks, unheated tanks, and outdoor ponds.

Planting

  • Planted: Bury the bottom 2 inches of each stem in substrate. It will root within a week.
  • Floating: Let it float freely. Elodea grows perfectly well floating.

Why Aquarists Love Elodea

  • Nitrate absorption: One of the best plants for removing nitrates and ammonia.
  • Algae prevention: Fast growth outcompetes algae for nutrients and light.
  • Fish habitat: Dense stems provide hiding spots for fry, shrimp, and small fish.
  • Oxygenation: Visible oxygen production during photosynthesis.
  • Cost-effective: One bunch multiplies quickly through cuttings.

Propagation

Cut any stem above a leaf node. Both pieces will continue growing. One initial purchase can fill an entire tank within a month.

Potential Concerns

  • Invasive potential: Egeria densa is classified as invasive in some areas. Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
  • Shedding leaves: When first introduced, Elodea may shed lower leaves as it adjusts. This is temporary.
  • Too fast: It can grow TOO fast. Plan on trimming weekly in a well-lit, fertilized tank.

Best Uses in Aquascaping

Elodea works best as a background plant or floating mass. Pair it with midground plants like Cryptocoryne and foreground carpets like Dwarf Hair Grass for a balanced, natural look.
