Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the most popular and reliable freshwater aquarium plants in the hobby. Known for its rich green, textured leaves and exceptional hardiness, this classic rhizome plant thrives in a wide range of aquarium conditions, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Its slow growth, low light tolerance, and ability to attach to hardscape make Java Fern a staple plant for natural aquascapes, community tanks, and shrimp setups.

Overview

Java Fern features broad, leathery green leaves that grow from a thick horizontal rhizome. Unlike stem or rooted plants, Java Fern should not be buried in substrate. Instead, it attaches naturally to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium décor, making it one of the most versatile plants for aquascaping.
