The Lobelia Cardinalis, also called the Cardinal Plant, is a beautiful stem plant popular in the aquascaping world. It is native to North America, where it naturally grows along riverbanks and wetlands. The varieties used in aquariums are smaller and more compact compared to the larger wild form. When grown submerged in an aquarium, the leaves appear bright green and rounded. Under strong lighting and with added CO₂, the undersides of the leaves can develop attractive red or purple tones. Reaching about 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) in height, this plant is perfect for midground or background placement, adding rich color and texture contrast to any aquascape.
With proper conditions, the Cardinal Lobelia Cardinalis grows beautifully and enhances the overall look of your aquarium.
Prefers medium to high lighting to maintain compact growth and bring out its reddish tones.
Ideal water temperature ranges between 72–82°F (22–28°C).
Supplemental CO₂ is not required but helps promote vibrant growth and stronger coloration.
Thrives in soft to moderately hard water with a pH between 6.0–7.5.
Moderate growth rate, making it easy to manage without frequent trimming.
Propagation is done by trimming healthy stems and planting them back into the substrate.
