Hygrophila Araguaia (scientific name: Hygrophila lancea ‘Araguaia’, commonly known as Hygrophila Araguaia, Araguaia Hygro, or simply Hygro Araguaia) is a compact stem plant prized for its narrow leaves and subtle red-bronze tones. Native to Asia and a member of the Acanthaceae family, this aquarium plant Hygrophila typically reaches 4–8 inches in height, making it ideal for low midground groupings or sculpted foreground clusters in planted aquariums. It should be planted directly in nutrient-rich substrate to establish strong roots and spread effectively. Adaptable to both fully aquatic layouts and emersed growth, it is a versatile choice for aquascapers seeking a colorful, low-maintenance accent.
Simple, predictable care keeps Hygrophila lancea Araguaia compact, colorful, and healthy.
Medium to high light encourages the best red-brown coloration. Under medium light it stays bushy; in low light it will grow greener and may become leggy.
22–28 °C (72–82 F) is ideal. Stable temperatures support consistent growth and color expression.
CO2 injection is recommended for denser growth and stronger coloration, but the hygro aquarium plant can survive in low-tech tanks with regular fertilization.
pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Regular dosing of macro and micro nutrients prevents pale leaves and supports steady development.
Slow to moderate growth rate. Frequent trimming of tips promotes side shoots and a fuller, lower profile.
Easy propagation by stem cuttings. Trim healthy tops or side shoots and replant in the substrate. Emersed propagation is straightforward in humid conditions for faster rooting.
