Pogostemon stellatus "Narrowleaf" - Live Freshwater Aquarium Plant

Pogostemon stellatus "Narrowleaf," also known as Eusteralis stellata, is a striking fine-leaved stem plant originating from swamps across East and Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Highly valued in aquascaping, this plant is admired for its delicate needle-like leaves arranged in elegant whorls along tall stems.

When grown submerged, Pogostemon stellatus develops narrow leaves ranging from green to reddish-purple, creating dramatic vertical accents in planted aquariums. Often sold in its emersed form, it will gradually transition to its true submerged appearance once planted underwater.

Key Features

Fine, Needle-Like Foliage
Slender leaves grow in whorled patterns, creating a soft, flowing texture unique among stem plants.

Bold Vertical Growth
A tall, elegant growth habit makes it ideal for background placement and nature-style aquascapes.

Color Responsive Plant
Leaf coloration intensifies under strong lighting and proper nutrient balance.

Indicator of Tank Health
Sensitive to nutrient deficiencies, making it a useful visual indicator of aquarium conditions.

Care Instructions

Lighting
Strong lighting is required (high light recommended) to maintain compact growth and coloration.

Water Conditions
• Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
• pH: 5.5-7.5
• Soft to medium-hard water

CO₂ & Fertilization
CO₂ supplementation is strongly recommended. A complete fertilizer regimen with micronutrients is essential to prevent pale or weakened leaves.

Substrate
Nutrient-rich substrate or regular water-column dosing is required.

Maintenance
Growth may occasionally pause even under good conditions. Trim carefully and replant healthy tops to maintain density.

Aquarium Benefits

• Adds height and movement to aquascapes
• Creates dramatic contrast in planted tanks
• Enhances depth in nature and Dutch-style layouts
• Supports biological balance when properly maintained

Perfect For

• Intermediate to advanced aquarists
• High-tech planted aquariums
• Background aquascaping
• CO₂-injected tanks
• Aquascapers seeking fine-leaf texture

Why Choose Pogostemon stellatus "Narrowleaf"?

This plant is prized for its elegance and challenge. When provided with stable lighting, CO₂, and nutrients, Pogostemon stellatus rewards aquarists with unmatched texture, color, and vertical drama that few plants can replicate.

Leaf color, density, and growth rate depend heavily on lighting, CO₂, and nutrient stability. Images are for reference only; natural variation occurs.
