How to Plant Anubias

Important: Never bury the rhizome! The rhizome (thick horizontal stem where leaves and roots emerge) must be exposed. Burying it causes rot and death.

Method 1: Super Glue (Easiest)

1. Dry the rock or driftwood surface slightly
2. Apply a small dab of cyanoacrylate super glue (gel type works best — it's aquarium-safe once cured)
3. Press the rhizome against the glue for 30 seconds
4. Place in tank — the glue cures instantly underwater

Method 2: Thread or Fishing Line

1. Wrap cotton thread or fishing line around the rhizome and hardscape
2. Tie securely but not so tight it damages the rhizome
3. Within weeks, roots will grab the surface and you can remove the thread

Method 3: Wedge in Crevices

Simply wedge the rhizome into a crack between rocks or in driftwood gaps. Roots will eventually anchor it permanently.

Anubias Care Tips

• Light: Low to moderate. High light causes algae on the slow-growing leaves
• CO2: Not needed. Anubias is one of the most CO2-independent plants
• Fertilizer: Minimal. Fish waste usually provides enough nutrients. A light liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks helps but isn't required
• Algae on leaves: Spot-treat with hydrogen peroxide (turn off filter, apply directly with syringe, wait 5 minutes, restart filter). Or add algae-eating shrimp/snails
• Propagation: Cut the rhizome with a sharp blade — each piece with at least 3 leaves will grow into a new plant
• Patience: Anubias grows 1-2 new leaves per month. It's a marathon, not a sprint
