Size: 8-16" tall | Leaf shape: Large, heart-shaped | Best for: 20+ gallon tanks
The original and most recognized Anubias. Anubias Barteri produces large, impressive leaves on thick stems. It's a statement plant — a single specimen can become the centerpiece of an aquascape. Slow-growing but incredibly robust. Perfect for medium to large tanks.
Size: 4-6" tall | Leaf shape: Small, round | Best for: Any tank size
The most popular Anubias variety and possibly the most popular aquarium plant, period. Anubias Nana's compact size makes it perfect for nano tanks, midground placement, or creating dense clusters on driftwood. It's the go-to recommendation for absolute beginners.
Size: 1-3" tall | Leaf shape: Tiny, round | Best for: Nano tanks, foreground accents
The miniature version of Nana — adorably small leaves that look amazing on small rocks and twigs. Shrimp keepers love it because shrimp perch on the leaves to graze. It's also a staple in competitive aquascaping for precise, detailed work.
Size: 6-10" tall | Leaf shape: Textured, wrinkled | Best for: 10+ gallon tanks
Named for its resemblance to coffee plant leaves, Coffeefolia has deeply textured, wrinkled leaves with prominent veining. New leaves emerge with a reddish-bronze color before darkening to green. One of the most visually interesting Anubias varieties.
Size: 8-12" tall | Leaf shape: Long, narrow | Best for: Background placement
An elegant Anubias with elongated, lance-shaped leaves that create a different visual texture than the typical round-leaf varieties. Great for adding variety to an Anubias collection.
Size: 10-16"+ tall | Leaf shape: Arrow-shaped | Best for: Large tanks, emergent growth
The largest common Anubias variety with distinctive arrow-shaped leaves. Hastifolia can grow partially above water in open-top tanks, creating a dramatic emergent effect. Best for experienced hobbyists with larger setups.
Important: Never bury the rhizome! The rhizome (thick horizontal stem where leaves and roots emerge) must be exposed. Burying it causes rot and death.
Simply wedge the rhizome into a crack between rocks or in driftwood gaps. Roots will eventually anchor it permanently.

Anubias is the #1 recommended plant for beginners. It grows in any light, needs no CO2 or special substrate, attaches to decorations, and is nearly impossible to kill. If you can keep a fish alive, you can grow Anubias.
Anubias is a slow grower — expect 1-2 new leaves per month under typical conditions. This is actually an advantage: slow growth means less maintenance, less trimming, and very stable aquascapes. A well-maintained Anubias can live 10+ years.
