Cold Water Aquarium Plants

Cold Water Aquarium Plants — Hardy Plants for Unheated Tanks

Not every aquarium has a heater — and not every aquarium needs one. Goldfish tanks, axolotl habitats, temperate setups, garage tanks, and outdoor-transitional aquariums all operate at cooler temperatures (60-72°F) where many tropical plants struggle. But a cold water tank doesn't have to be an unplanted tank.

At Canton Aquatics, we've assembled this collection of cold water aquarium plants — species that are proven to thrive in unheated tanks and cooler temperatures. Every plant here has been selected for its ability to grow, stay healthy, and look beautiful at temperatures well below the tropical standard of 78°F.

What Temperature Is "Cold Water"?

In aquarium terms, cold water generally means anything below 72°F (22°C). Common cold water setups include:

  • Goldfish tanks — 65-72°F
  • Axolotl tanks — 60-68°F
  • Unheated indoor tanks — typically 64-72°F depending on room temperature
  • Seasonal outdoor tubs — variable, can drop to 50°F+
  • White Cloud / Danio tanks — 64-72°F

Most "tropical" aquarium plants prefer 75-82°F. Below 72°F, many tropical species grow slowly, lose color, or gradually decline. The plants in this collection are different — they've evolved in temperate environments or have proven adaptability to cooler conditions.

Best Cold Water Aquarium Plants

Hornwort — The Cold Water Champion (50°F+)

Hornwort is one of the hardiest cold water plants available. It tolerates temperatures as low as 50°F and still grows vigorously. In goldfish ponds and unheated tanks, Hornwort is often the fastest-growing plant, providing excellent nitrate absorption and oxygenation even in cool water.

Anacharis — Classic Cold Water Staple (50°F+)

Anacharis (Elodea) is the quintessential cold water aquarium plant. Native to temperate North and South America, it thrives in cool water that would stress tropical plants. It grows quickly, adapts to almost any conditions, and has been a mainstay of goldfish tanks for over a century.

Java Fern — Cold-Tolerant Epiphyte (60°F+)

Java Fern handles cold water surprisingly well. While technically a subtropical plant, it performs beautifully down to 60°F. Its slow growth rate actually becomes an advantage in cold water — less trimming, more stability. Attach it to rocks or driftwood and it becomes a permanent, low-maintenance feature.

Vallisneria — Cold-Hardy Background (60°F+)

Vallisneria is native to temperate regions worldwide and handles cold water with ease. In unheated tanks, Val continues to spread through runners and produce its characteristic flowing leaves. Jungle Vallisneria creates stunning tall backgrounds even in cold water setups.

Java Moss — Thrives in Cool Water (59°F+)

Java Moss actually grows better in cooler water. At typical tropical temperatures (78-82°F), it can get leggy, but in cold water tanks it produces dense, compact growth. It's the ideal ground cover and hardscape accent for cold water aquariums.

Anubias — Reliable in Cold Water (65°F+)

Anubias tolerates cooler temperatures well, growing at its characteristically slow pace down to 65°F. In cold water tanks, Anubias is less prone to algae on its leaves (a common issue in warmer, high-light setups), making it even easier to maintain.

Marimo Moss Ball — Naturally Cold Water (40°F+)

Marimo Moss Balls are native to cold lakes in Japan and Northern Europe — they're one of the few aquarium plants that actually prefers cold water. In fact, Marimo balls can struggle in warm tropical tanks. If you have a cold water setup, Marimo is in its natural element.

Floating Plants — Cold-Tolerant Surface Cover

Frogbit, Salvinia, Duckweed, and Azolla all tolerate cool water. Azolla (Fairy Moss) is particularly cold-hardy — it survives outdoors year-round in many temperate climates. These floating plants provide shade and nutrient absorption in cold water setups.

Tips for Cold Water Planted Tanks

  1. Expect slower growth. Most plants grow more slowly in cool water. This is actually a benefit — less maintenance, less trimming, more stable aquascapes.
  2. Reduce lighting duration. With slower plant growth, you need less light. 6-7 hours per day prevents algae while supporting plant health.
  3. Fertilize moderately. Slower growth means lower nutrient demand. Fertilize at half the recommended dose for tropical tanks.
  4. Choose appropriate fish. Cold water fish (goldfish, white clouds, danios, weather loaches) pair naturally with these plants.
  5. Monitor seasonal changes. If your tank is in an unheated room, temperatures may fluctuate seasonally. All plants in this collection handle gradual temperature shifts well.
