Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis sp. 'Mini') - Live Freshwater Aquarium Plant
Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis sp. 'Mini') is a popular foreground aquarium plant valued for its fine, grass-like blades and its ability to form natural-looking green carpets in freshwater aquariums. Its compact growth habit makes it suitable for both small and large tanks, adding depth and realism to planted aquascapes.
This species spreads through runners over time, gradually filling open substrate areas with soft green coverage. With proper planting and stable conditions, it creates a clean, minimalist foreground that complements rocks, driftwood, and other aquatic plants.
Key Features
Low-Growing Foreground Plant:
Maintains a short height, making it well-suited for foreground and open aquascape layouts.
Natural Carpet Formation:
Spreads horizontally through runners, creating even ground coverage over time.
Flexible Tank Compatibility:
Works well in nano aquariums, standard tanks, and larger aquascapes.
Fine Leaf Texture:
Thin blades create a soft, natural appearance that enhances aquascape depth.
Emersed Growth Compatible:
Can be grown emersed in humid environments, including Dry Start Method setups.
Benefits
Dwarf Hairgrass enhances aquarium aesthetics by creating a natural grassy foreground that highlights fish movement and hardscape structure. It provides shelter for shrimp and small fish, supports beneficial microorganisms, and helps stabilize substrates. As it establishes, it competes for nutrients, contributing to a balanced planted tank environment.
Care Instructions
Lighting:
Performs best under medium to high lighting. Higher light encourages denser growth, while moderate lighting supports slower, steady spreading.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 68-82°F (20-28°C)
pH: 6.0-7.5
Substrate & Planting:
Plant small plugs spaced approximately ½-1 inch apart using tweezers. Fine-grain, nutrient-rich substrates promote stronger root development.
CO₂ & Fertilization:
CO₂ supplementation is optional but may improve density and growth consistency. Liquid fertilizers and root nutrients can support healthy development.
Maintenance:
Trim blades as needed to control height and encourage lateral growth.
Perfect For
• Foreground carpeting in planted aquariums
• Aquascapers seeking a natural grass-style layout
• Nano tanks and large aquascapes
• Shrimp and community aquariums
• Emersed or submerged plant setups
Growth Notes
Growth rate varies depending on lighting, nutrients, and CO₂ availability. Under stable conditions, runners gradually spread to fill open areas, forming a uniform carpet over time.
Important Notes
Live aquarium plants naturally vary in size, shape, and appearance at the time of shipment. Growth results depend on aquarium conditions, lighting, nutrients, and planting technique. Images are for reference only.

Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula) is moderate difficulty. It can carpet without CO2 in high light, but CO2 dramatically speeds the process. It needs a fine-grained substrate (sand or aqua soil) and regular iron supplementation.
With CO2 and high light: 6-10 weeks for a full carpet. Without CO2: 3-6 months in high light. Plant in small plugs spaced 1 inch apart and the runners will fill in the gaps. Regular trimming encourages lateral spreading.
CO2 isn't required but makes a dramatic difference. Without CO2, growth is 3-4x slower and the carpet may be thinner. If you skip CO2, use high light and dose liquid carbon (like Excel/Glutaraldehyde) as a supplement.
