The Ludwigia Arcuata, commonly known as Needle Leaf Ludwigia, is a beautiful freshwater stem plant from the Onagraceae family. It is native to North America, this aquarium plant is valued for its thin, graceful leaves and ability to change colors depending on the conditions provided. When grown emersed (above water), its leaves are narrow and green, while in submerged growth inside an aquarium, the leaves become finer, more needle-like, and can develop a striking red to orange tint under proper lighting. This makes the Needle Leaf a versatile choice for aquascaping. With good fertilization and nutrient-rich substrate, the plant thrives and shows its best colors. It is most often placed in the mid-ground or background, where its tall stems create depth and texture in the aquascape.
This ludwigia aquarium plant is low to medium in maintenance, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
High light is necessary for the most vibrant red coloration. Under moderate light, Needle Leaf Ludwigia will often stay orange-brown with less intense color.
Grows well in water temperatures between 68–82°F (20–28°C).
CO2 is highly recommended for optimal growth and color. Without CO2, the plant will grow more slowly, and its colors will be less vibrant.
Prefers soft to moderately hard water with a pH range of 6.0–7.5.
Moderate growth rate. Regular trimming helps keep stems compact and promotes bushier growth.
Cut healthy stems and replant them in the substrate. For best results, remove a few of the lower leaves from the cutting before planting to encourage stronger root development.
