The Dwarf Baby Tears, also known as Micranthemum Callitrichoides, is one of the smallest and most popular carpeting aquatic plants in the aquarium hobby. It belongs to the Linderniaceae family and originates from Cuba, where it grows naturally along riverbanks and moist rocks in warm tropical regions. This charming plant features tiny, round leaves that form a thick, bright green carpet, adding a lush and natural look to any planted aquarium. With an average height of only 1–3 cm, Dwarf Baby Tears is best suited for the foreground of aquariums or nano tanks. It also makes an excellent choice for wabi kusa arrangements due to its compact growth and vibrant color.
For planting, divide the plant into small clumps and use aquarium tweezers to insert them gently into a nutrient-rich substrate. Space the clumps a few centimeters apart to allow room for spreading. Over time, the plant will grow horizontally, forming a soft, dense carpet that enhances the overall appearance of your tank.
Though it requires a bit of care, once established, Dwarf Baby Tears rewards you with a stunning underwater lawn.
This plant thrives under high lighting conditions. Strong, consistent light helps the Dwarf Baby Tears aquarium plant grow compact and vibrant. Insufficient light may cause the plant to grow upward rather than spreading horizontally.
Ideal water temperature ranges between 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F). Stable temperature ensures steady growth and maintains its healthy green color.
Supplementing CO₂ is highly recommended. Although Hemianthus Callitrichoides can survive without it, injected CO₂ promotes faster and denser carpet formation.
Keep the water slightly soft to neutral, with a pH level between 5.0 and 7.5. Regular water changes help maintain healthy growth and prevent algae buildup.
The growth rate of Micranthemum Callitrichoides is moderate to fast under ideal conditions. With good lighting and CO₂, it can quickly form a dense green mat.
Propagation is simple. Trim and replant small clumps in the substrate. Over time, these cuttings will spread and cover the foreground beautifully.
